A Guide to Trail Mud Tyres | Limits to Grip

Cedric’s softies came in last minute and when we saw the tread outlines we were glad of their inclusion. With possibly the most densely populated tread pattern the Panaracer features a relatively thin sidewall and is said to dig deep into sandy loose or muddy conditions.

Available in 2.1 (XC) or 2.25 (AM) we ran the CG’s out on a 140mm and 160mm bike respectively and were very impressed with their performance. On off –amber the bigger tyre had grip on par with the Trailraker (which mysteriously does not feature on the website that comes under the global Panasonic banner). I wonder however how much sidewall strength the 2.25 (750g) tyre has when put to task against sharper hardcore. Both tyres roll well, and that bigger tyre really does the business in everything wet. CG junior at 640g does similar, but with not quite the same subtlety of the Storm. A great tyre, but we would like to see similar rubber to the ‘Raker, beefier casing on the 2.25 and a longer side knob on the 2.1. That said, definitely one we’ll be looking to keep on board for the rest of the season.

Suitability: 50/50 and keep on for summer dust storms
