A Guide to Trail Mud Tyres | Limits to Grip

Available in two different dual tyre compounds, Bontrager’s mud tyres have long been a favourite, very much a 50/50 tyre. Similar in many ways to the Storms, the Mud X offers outstanding value for money and superb reliability. The tubeless ready Muds are easy to mount, incredibly light and offer grip for all–year–round conditions.

We tested both versions of the tyre and although both are exceptional for mixed wet weather riding we found the XR with softer compound not be as strong and were a little surprised when we put a hole in them on simple trail centre stone. Very definitely one to keep for the brown stuff, we found the Mud X to be slightly stronger all round, maybe if ever there’s a case for mixing it’s with an XR up front and Mud X on rear. It’s only when the going gets extreme that they lose the edge to the Trailraker, but for speed across the ground, a tyre to leave on for trail centres, then look no further.

Suitability: 50/50 specialist, go for the stronger Mud X.
