A Guide to Trail Mud Tyres | Limits to Grip

With the biggest profile on test (2.35) the Swampy has some of the best absorption and support in downhill type conditions over root and rock. It simply doesn’t get deflected in the same way as the skinnier tyres here on test. Compared to its Super Tacky sister this 60a compound tyre is considerably faster in terms of rolling resistance, it just lacks the phenomenal grip and heavy duty casing which arguably you don’t really need for trail type descents. We raced the Swampy 60 in the filthy Alpine Battle in Les Gets last summer and found it to be a superb in the mixed conditions.

Of all the tyres on test the Swampy is the best all–rounder for riders who frequently tackle more than trail centre riding. It doesn’t quite have the cutting edge of a Trailraker, but makes up with a rounder and less deflection prone high volume. Sidewalls however on this particular Maxxis are quite thin, something to bear in mind. But then you can always pump up the sidewall thickness or take things even further with a Super Tacky compound. I reckon they’re pretty damn good as they are.

Suitability: Leans more towards shorter rides with more descents.
