At first glance, the D3 isn’t the prettiest of helmets, but it certainly is a grower, that’s for sure. Available in both a carbon composite and full carbon aerospace shell, there are options, if neither are particularly cheap. Introduced as an updated version of the classic D2, the D3 offers the same effortless cool that the D2 did but with more protection as required by modern downhill racing. Both the style and fit of Troy Lee helmets is legendary and this has been built upon for the new model with the D3 now coming in six different sizes. The D3 offers everything the D2 did in terms of weight, fit, stunning looks, range of colour/paint options but updated for the modern racer. The dual-density padding and EPS liner, combined with the aerospace shell construction make this one of the comfiest and safest full-face helmets on the market. The titanium D-lock and visor screws add a touch of class, and won’t go rusty any time soon. Neither composite or carbon options are particularly cheap, but quality of this standard rarely is. Next time you watch the World Cup Downhill, take a moment to see just how many of the fast boys and girls trust a D3 to look after them if things go nasty.
