Team ‘Propain Dirt Zelvy’ is GO

Propain, Dirt and Zelvy 'hook it up' in a two year deal

We love Ben Reid and the Dirt race team, and everything that they do for us. So we are very proud to announce that for the 2016 and 2017 race seasons Ben and the gang of riders will be racing under the ‘Propain Dirt Zelvy’ team banner.

We’ve always supported young, up and coming riders, many of whom have gone on to great things, and the 2016/17 race season will be no different. We keep some old faces and bring in some new ones… and of course we have some new (major) sponsors on board. Team Manager Ben Reid takes up the story for us:

“When one door closes another one normally opens and I am pleased to say we couldn’t have been more welcomed by our new title sponsors Propain Bikes and Zelvy Carbon who will make up the new title position of team ‘Propain Dirt Zelvy’ for 2016 and 2017. I’ve been really happy with how the team has progressed this past few seasons and its nice to see the hard work by everyone paying off, having more choice for sponsorship than any other off season in the past it has really allowed us to pick and choose and I feel really confident in the brands we are moving forward with.

Within days of talking to Robert Krauss from Propain it was clear that the understanding of what it takes to support a World Cup race team was there, and from some of our first chats with Robert he was already offering custom frame sizes to insure the bikes would be a perfect fit for each individual rider considering their size, style and preferences. I spent a fair amount of time looking around the Propain booth at Eurobike this year and the undeniable quality and attention to detail of these bikes stood out to me, following this up by studying the suspension kinematics of the Propain Rage it was clear what I was looking at had a lot of thought put into every detail. At that time we had several frame manufacturers to consider but testing the Propain bikes sealed the deal for us.

Ben worked closely with Andy Mearns on the artwork for the team’s truck and pit set up.

Zelvy Carbon is a company who make a lot of high tech carbon products and they will be supporting us with their carbon wheelsets whilst joining Propain and Dirt to make up the team title. I was really impressed by the information Greg Geldard from Zelvy was able to show me from all the testing they have carried out. Zelvy make some of the fastest and best value carbon wheels on the planet and we had been eyeing them up for some time and watching them sell their wheels all over the world. I know Steve Jones, Deputy Editor at Dirt, has been testing a pair for almost a year now and from what I understand he might never give them back! We know they’ll give our team an advantage over the rest, with the added stiffness of the carbon riding with precision it is a lot easier and even keeping the bike rolling as things flatten out is much more efficient. Greg had talked about improvements they made to help tyre stability and to eliminate burping, which has been a problem in the past, so it’s great to know they have covered every detail. Our partnership with these guys is something we are very excited about and I firmly believe their products will go a long way in helping our guys in their chase for results.

We have had a great first season with X-Fusion suspension this year and I know I can speak for everyone on the team to say how happy we are to continue with them, out of the box these are truly outstanding products with quality far greater than the price tag. We are also very pleased to continue with our clothing and protection partner Bliss, the team has been working closely with them as they developed their first line of race kit and again these guys put in so much effort into making sure their products are top notch, they also go over and above to make sure the team has its own unique kit, and as you can see they are on it already having our 2016 kit well under way.

Bell helmets, Giro shoes, Schwalbe tyres, Works Components headsets, all long term supporters of the team who we couldn’t be happier to continue with. Juice Lubes will be keeping our bikes and truck shiny clean and well lubed all season, which is other new partner we are pleased to welcome on board. You might have seen some of their ‘Home To Roost’ episodes showing a bunch of fast UK riders at their local trails, if not it is worth logging onto their website or Facebook page and checking these out. It’s clear to see the company is made up of true bike enthusiasts.

Another welcome partner to the team in Funn Components who we have signed with for both season as well and I am pleased to say they will be decking our bikes out with their bars, stems, grips, cranks, chain guides, chain rings, seat posts, saddles and seat clamps. Funn is a company I used ride for myself back in my Iron Horse days, for me these guys really set the standard with modern handlebar geometry that a lot of companies seemed to follow. I remember getting way too attached to my Funn ‘Full On’ handlebars and have since found it hard to have the same comfortable feel. The team is also proud to be working with Crank Brothers pedals and again the passion these guys are showing for the team at such an early stage is unbelievable and they are already talking about custom team coloured pedals, a relatively small detail but pretty cool all the same. X Force will be keeping the muck out of our eyes as the team’s new eye wear partner, another company getting on board and offering the team custom colours. Last but not least Slik Graphics have been a big part in the image of the team and will continue to make all our team graphics for the frames and forks.
I would also like to thank Nutt Travel for their continued support with their ‘competitor discount’ rates on our ferry crossings back and forth to mainland UK and Europe, these rates are available to anyone heading to a sporting event and are always a ton cheaper than booking direct, you just have to ask for the ‘Competitor Discount’ rate. The guys behind the desk at Nutt Travel are all motor bike and rally enthusiasts and always go over and above to offer the best available prices to anyone out there competing in wheeled sports of any sort.”

RIDERS

TM Ben Reid takes us through the team riders:

“I’m not sure if I can really put into words how excited I am to be moving forward with the riders we have on board for next year and I feel this is one of the strongest teams put together since I have been running the team. Without a doubt Phil (Atwill) had to remain part of the team, apart from his sheer speed on the track and top 20 World Cup results (and not to mention the massive reception on any video we put out featuring Phil) he has simply been a breath of fresh air to have on board. He has a great attitude and the drive to push himself to new levels.

“Couldn’t be more excited to be on board with Mr Ben Reid for another season! Stoked to have Innes and James on board as well as Isak! They are all good lads and I see us all working well next season to get some top results! I’m also well impressed with this new Propain piece that’s just arrived in my living room, had a few laps on her already and she’s smooth as, bring on 2016”

After Isak’s (Levinson) horrific 2013 and 2014 seasons riddled with injury I was really impressed with his consistency this year in and around the top 40, slipping inside the top 30 on occasion and also winning his national championships again. I think it shows in his riding this year that he was just finding his speed again and I think next year can be a good season for him, plus he listens to heavy metal so that suits me!

“I’m thrilled to be staying with Ben for another year on Propain Dirt Zelvy. With some new sponsors and team mates coming in I’m confident that my surroundings will help me achieve my goals!”

We have a new elite addition to the team in form of Innes Graham. Innes has unbelievable skill on two wheels and as a first year elite this year his 17th place at his home World Cup in Fort William was impressive along with finding himself just off the British national podium most of this season with three 6th place finishes, which is no easy feat given the depth of talent here in the UK. I’m very excited to see what this young fella has in store for us in 2016.

“I’m really looking forward to a fresh start for 2016 and joining the Dirt family is something I’m mega stoked about. I’ve had a lot of respect for Ben and his approach to racing since first seeing the truck at the races. It will be a great opportunity to work alongside him and the everyone involved.”

It doesn’t stop there as we will also be offering support to Newcastle’s James Purivs who will be representing us in the junior ranks. James was brought to my attention by Phil who has seen great potential in him throughout this season and with support from the team and surrounding team mates I have no doubt we can help James reach his potential.

“I’m chuffed to have been given the opportunity to ride for the team Propain Dirt Zelvy in 2016, it will be great having the support from a team and I’m stoked to have Ben as a manager and having Phil, Isak and Innes as team mates.”

Thanks again to everyone who follows the team and I hope you will all stay tuned as we start to ramp things up in the New Year with another series of videos as we travel from race to race and Tommy C our media guy will be blasting out many individual edits with each of the riders. Happy New Year from everyone here at the team, 2016 is set to be a smasher!”

We grabbed a few words with Propain bicycles founder and CEO Robert Krauss:

“Having a World Cup Race Team is a dream come true for all of us here at Propain. When we started the company seven years ago in a small garage and designed our first Rage downhill frame we would have never imagined that one day a high profile World Cup downhill team would take this bike to the races around the globe. When we started talking to Ben Reid we were all immediately psyched about his ideas and loved the team’s philosophy. The team consists of carefully chosen young riders with outstanding talent paired with Ben’s experience to bring them to the top spots of the podium. We are therefore extremely proud that Ben has chosen our frame design out of the many options out there and considers it to be the right bike for the team. We are sure the RAGE frame will deliver and will allow the riders to show their full potential.
Ben and the team will also be working closely with our research and development team to optimize frame designs and to find possibilities for innovations and improvements. With their feedback and our passion for great designs Propain will push the limits of mountain bike design even further. Now we are looking forward to the first of many great seasons together.”

And we caught up with Greg Geldard, Founder and Director of Zelvy, to see what he had to say about the new partnership:

“Zelvy is excited to announce their major sponsorship of team Propain Dirt Zelvy for 2016/17. The sponsorship will see Zelvy boosting onto the World Cup scene and supporting a powerhouse team. We are pumped to be a part of the really special Propain Dirt Zelvy team for at least the next two seasons.
We’ve been waiting for an opportunity to come along like this, and we’re excited to push the team riders and Propain bikes faster than ever before, powered by our Zelvy carbon wheels. The Zelvy team hail from Toowoomba Australia, one of the very first areas to receive a public mountain bike park. We live and ride in a mountain bikers paradise. We needed support from our council to make a public space for all mountain bikers to ride so I made it happen ten years ago.
All our research and development is done up here in Toowoomba, it’s perfect really. We have all types of tracks so we can test our wheels under every condition we can imagine. We stand by our wheelsets, offering the best components such as Funn, who we are pumped to have on board as our hubset provider for the Propain Dirt Zelvy team. We also have a five year warranty on our wheels which proves how confident we are in their ability to perform. The Propain Dirt Zelvy partnership gets under way in 2016. Keep up to date with all team news, behind the scenes and results on both the dirtmountainbike.com and zelvycarbon.com websites.”
