Scott Grenade Pro 2 Knee pads

Can anyone better these kneepads? Doesn't look that way...

When it comes to technical clothing and kit from Scott, it is very apparent that they believe the devil is in the detail; they are not shy of modern, progressive design. A bit like Brendan Fairclough’s house. It shows in many of their products but none more so than these Scott Grenade Pro 2 Knee pads; our choice for DH and high-mountain riding.

Scott’s ‘Gravity product manager’ Ben Walker is a perfectionist when it comes to improving and tweaking a product. He spends considerable time riding and testing in the mountains around Champery and Morgins, so yes they are downhill pads through and through.

Well-secured, well-made and covering all the right features

“The Grenade 2 Pro pads provide serious DH protection yet are supremely comfortable, durable, and most importantly stay in place on impact and during hard pedalling”

The original Grenade pad from Scott was more suitable for trail riding but had a lot more side protection than its lightweight competitors. It was comfortable, and here in version 2 Scott have kept this, but carefully increased the all round protection for more serious gravity use. They have a more substantial feel to them now, with a more serious kneecap covering, addition side protection and a further ‘flex joint’ pad below the top strap. The areas that are vulnerable to more frequent impacts have an additional textured plastic coating to reduce wear. The protection itself is from D30, a soft and malleable material that hardens on impact yet returns to its flexible nature afterwards. It’s premium technology hence the price of the pads. Behind the knee pad is a foam pad that is removable to give a custom fit.

Talking of fit… this is an area in which Walker has worked on tirelessly. The key here is the placement of the lower strap, which sits just above the calf muscle. This allows a lower tension to be used on the upper strap, giving much improved comfort without slipping.

Out on the hill these pads are impressive, the design brief has been well met; and the Grenades are hard to find fault with. Here is a pair of knee guards that provide serious DH protection yet are supremely comfortable, very durable and most importantly stay in place on impact and during hard pedalling.
