The Crank Brothers Mallet DH Race Pedal has been a familiar site on the DH race scene for some years now. With a lighter weight than the long-standing DX pedal from Shimano, with more mud clearance and a lower profile, it has had little competition from other brands until recently.
“With lighter weight, lower profile and great mud clearance, the Mallet DH has had little competion”
Crank Brothers pioneered a different binding mechanism from their Japanese and European competitors many years back and they have developed a loyal following. The rotating sprung clasp in the centre of the cage gives a four-sided entry with a fixed spring tension and very little for mud to cling to. Stamp on the Mallets in any conditions and you get a very positive cleat engagement. Although this is listed as a DH pedal, trail or enduro riders can benefit from running a pair of these on a mid travel machine too. Crank have seen fit to increase the Q-factor, moving the pedals 5mm further from the crank arms; a benefit to some now we are seeing wider spaced rear swingarms on many gravity bikes.
