Bontrager TLR Flash Charger

Tubeless tyre inflation in an instant

Some background to this Bontrager TLR Flash Charger to begin. Now Keith Bontrager has always been a wheel and tyre man. Along with his motocross and frame building background he was in early with developments of the mountainbike wheel, way back in ’84. When Trek acquired Bontrager Cycles in the mid 90s, his experience with product development then led to yet more improvements mountain bike components, with lighter ‘Tubeless ready’ (TLR) being a huge step forward. Here was a lighter and cheaper way of going tube free; with a rim, tyre, rim strip and sealant system.

“The Bontrager Flash Charger is a game changer”

Tubeless-ready tyres are commonplace now, as are compatible rims and a variety of sealants, ready to plug holes and create an airtight system. In fact many new bikes boast these features, giving you no excuses to ditch the tubes for a flat-free ride with increase grip and potential lower tyre pressures. It all sounds so easy, but often experience says not…

It’s the setting up that’s the problem, a real challenge at times; one that can make many a rider give up and stick with tubes. It can be less hassle. A compressor is your friend here, along with soapy water and a good dose of patience.

The Bontrager Flash Charger is a game changer. This is a portable track pump designed specifically for the mounting and inflation of tubeless tyres on a mountain bike. Looking like a normal workshop floor pump, the Charger has an additional oversized secondary barrel that you initially charge to around 160psi in the normal manner (around forty strokes of the lever). You then release the compressed air with the pump’s control lever into the tyre. The rush of air is more than enough to mount even a loose fitting tyre onto a tubeless rim. Add the sealant, re-inflate, check it’s seated correctly and you’re done, ready to ride. No fuss, no stress.

More portable and quieter than a compressor; take the Charger pump on a road trip or to a race weekend. It’s a well built, innovative piece of kit. You’ll wonder how you got by without one.
