The Avid Code Brake is one of the few lighter weight brakes designed with DH and gravity riding in mind. With downhill bikes getting lighter by the year riders are looking for areas to shed unnecessary weight from their bikes without compromising performance or reliability.
“With a four-pot caliper and reassuring power delivery you would expect the Avid Code to carry some bulk, but the standard model weighs in at only just over 400g”
Now if the truth were told, the Avid Code brakes that we’ve been using (and grown to love) are not exactly the ‘off the shelf’ models. OEM (original equipment) specs can vary and it’s on the Specialized S-Works Demo 8 where we have been treated to the Code caliper matched to a Guide RS lever.
Lack of power is something you will never encounter with these brakes, regardless of which lever you run but we especially like the feel of the Guide lever. That said, the genuine Code lever is a very solid item and is likely to stand up to more abuse and crashes than the Guide RS model; maybe a more appropriate choice for many riders anyway?
