Fox Factory 40 FIT RC2

The best downhill fork of 2016. Simple as that.

Launched over ten years ago the Fox 40 has seen a steady rise to world prominence. It has also seen a steady rise in performance too. But most of all it seems that finally there is consistency in terms of each and every fork that leaves the factory. This has taken many years to achieve.

On some occasions we would receive new test bikes with Fox forks that felt about as smooth and slippery as a nightclub floor on the morning after. They were high maintenance even before you managed to get on the hill.

They were also slightly stiff, giving too much deflection off objects rather than bending around the bad stuff in the heat of the moment. When they launched the air version of the fork Fox described the new chassis as lighter but ‘more compliant.’ And so began the rise of the fork to its current status. Which is?

It offers a smooth, stiction free action within a chassis which is just right for the new wheel size

Well, the fork has helped deliver several riders to world cup series titles over the past decade, indeed the 40 has won the overall World Cup men’s series title on five of the past six years. Aaron Gwin has been the shining knight for Fox there’s no doubt, winning three of those titles. So it has succeeded. But that’s all very well and good for riders that are waited on but what about the man on the street?

Its here where the Fox really scores because finally the 40 has managed to walk the walk as well as it can talk the talk (something they’d been trying so hard to be for many years). It offers a smooth, stiction free action within a chassis which is just right for the new wheel size. Yes, we’ve had some top out issues where air has become displaced on occasion, which prevents it from getting a full score, but in terms of damping quality and ride characteristic it’s both smooth and strong, able to muscle every other fork off the hill. With the Bos FCV fork being disappointing this season, the Fox 40 becomes our choice of best downhill fork on the market.
