UPDATE BELOW
OK, so we’ll admit it, our friends over at Vital got to this before us (in the media scrummage that is ‘social media’). So what is interesting about this Instagram post from Aaron Gwin? Well Gwin is out of contract with Specialized at the end of this year, so we are likely to see some kind of move from the current World Cup Champion. There have been rumours flying around, names tossed into the ring… we have an idea of what he is doing… but… err… it would be unprofessional to say!
Anyway, back to the Instagram post. Here’s what it says:
“Made it to Pittsburgh on a red eye flight last night. Showed up to the site this morning and the boys had already shut down Canton Ave ???? Shootin a fun project for @redbull and @audi on the “steepest street” in the United States. First dirt, then we’re bringin in snow.. And jumps ???? Gonna get hectic! ???????? #makinmoves #cantonavenue #steepeststreet”
It seems that Pittsburgh’s Canton Avenue is pretty famous, as it is appprently the steepest road in the world (you only need to watch the first bit of this really)! At 37% it does sound steep, they even have road races up it. So in the US this bit of cobbled road is infamous. Red Bull have been spending big money on sweet edits recently. Kriss Kyle’s Kaleidoscope here almost melted the internet last week, and a bit before that came RB’s take on BMX Bandits, and if you factor in stuntmen, explosions, etc. it will have cost a fair bit too.
This project sounds pretty bonkers, “First dirt, then we’re bringin in snow.. And jumps ???? Gonna get hectic! ????????” It’s great to see Gwin involved with something a little different to your standard race stuff. But will this be the last time we see him on a Specialized? And what is the deal with Audi? Is that just a co-sponsor to the Red Bull thing, or is there more to it than that? The Athertons are tied in with Jeep, so what about Gwin and Audi? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Speculation is such a great thing!
UPDATE
So now there is snow. Seems it is all over though. No idea what is coming out, or when.
