Taxco Urban Downhill Photo Epic

Bernado Cruz takes the win out in Mexico

Now in its second year, the Down Hill Taxco (south west of Mexico City) urban downhill race is becoming one of the best off-season (off the wall) events on the calendar. Raced down through the streets of the city it attracts a mixed and varied bunch of competitors. Local racers mingled with the likes of DH stars Neko Mulally, Mitch Ropelato, Filip Polc and Bernard Kerr, ‘freerider’ (is that word still used!?) Cam Zink, king whippper Bernardo Cruz, 4X racer Tomas Slavik, and others.

The course was changed and shortened from last year, which meant that the atmosphere was even more heightened and the environment even more intense. And there is no doubt that it is an event that makes for some amazing photographs (just check out these great photos that Nicolas Switalski took for us). It was to be Brazilian racer Bernardo Cruz that took the win (he also won this event last year) in front of a reported 20,000 fans!

Geoff Gulevich could not race this year due to a bad food poisoning, he ended up in a hospital the whole weekend.
Matt Walker got into the mix with a very respectable 3rd place.

Jeremy Witek’s helmet was painted just before the race by a local artist using traditional colours and images/graphics.
Finn Iles doing what he is best known for, he finished the race in 11th place getting in front of other big names.
Cam Zink wasn’t in Taxco to speed down through the stairs, he was there to give his all in the “Best Trick” comp, which he won.

What a photo. Carlos Castillo from Costa Rica threads his way down the course, dodging walls and spectators!
Andrew Nethling’s race kit was a Taxco souvenir T-shirt thanks to the fact that his airline lost his luggage.
Antoni Villoni surprised everyone with a Cliffhanger on the best trick competition. Here, dropping into the plaza and final section.
Filip Polc exhausted after putting it all into his last run.
Bernardo Cruz laying it low on the last jump of the race to make up some time, it was worth it!
