Nukeproof join the 29" wheel flying machine party

It all began with a group of boys from Belfast tipping off the top of Pic Blanc in Alpe D’Huez competing in the annual pilgrimage to the classic Megavalanche event and in the process deciding to make their own version of the modern enduro style bike. Welcome to the Nukeproof Mega 290.

Today we have the agonising of those angles and suspension design brought into fashion one hell of a range of bikes. The Mega may not have been the first enduro bike but it certainly delivers all the values and needs of those involved in hard riding in high places.

The Mega, be it in 27.5” or 29” wheel sizes delivers quality componentry within a solid chassis at great prices. Up until this year the design centre based out of Northern Ireland have only offered the bike in 27.5” but now they have got wise and have the larger, faster wheel into the mix. Its great to see. A scarce beast too.

How so? Well now and again there’s a feeling that 29” wheels could become a bit of a rare breed. This could in part be due to the pitiful inability of those on the shop floor of bike shops across the UK to understand the ways of the bigger wheel or the lack of heart on the part of the manufacturer to go with something new. Either one way, or another, its hard to get a good 150mm travel 29” wheel bike – only the BMC Trailfox and Specialized Enduro really cut it.

So what makes a good 29” wheel bike? Well nothing really that much different to any other wheel size bike. Which is maybe where many have gone wrong. 150mm is all about hard riding in tricky places in whatever wheel size that may be.

Wheels are obviously a big part of that, and there’s no getting away from the fact that is one of the first component parts to get right. Featuring Sram Rail 50 on the Team bike and Roam 40 and 30 on the Pro and Comp respectively we’d be looking for something a bit stiffer such as the Mavic wheels used on our test bike.

It’s a very important point but then so to is suspension and geometry. The Mega’s competition both have weak points too. Firstly the Enduro requires tweaking on the angle numbers and the BMC damper needs more muscle. Nukeproof have certainly got the numbers very well dialled in on this bike and it’s a bike that has an instantly recognisable ride characteristic. The angles on this bike really are prime. It’s certainly a very good thing for a company to deliver such a positive bike that (apart from those wheels) is fully equipped to do everything its smaller wheel stablemate can do. But at higher speeds.
