Five gearbox enduro bikes

Will these bikes kill the derailleur?

Gearboxes are a tricky one. On one hand they keep your gears safe and clean, while centralising the mass of the bike. On the other they are heavier than traditional drivetrains.

In enduro, where every second counts, that added weight could have you blowing out on the climb and losing precious seconds, or even the race, but then, a snapped chain or bent hanger can be chronic.

While we haven’t seen any mainstream movements towards the gearbox, a few smaller brands are releasing experimental bikes that could lead the way. Here are five of the best:

Five Gearbox enduro bikes:

Cavalerie Anakin

With a belt drive gearbox, the Cavalerie Anakin certainly draws some stares on the trail. The Cavalerie brand was devised by the same guys that made its Efiigear box so there’s no doubt the tech will have been implemented well.

There’s a full custom bike builder available on the Cavalerie site, or you can just buy the frame and build it up at your leisure. There’s also the 185mm Squirrel if you’re looking for something a bit more brutish.

Zerode Taniwha

In Māori mythology, Taniwha are highly respected protective guardians, or in some traditions, stealthy, predatory beings, could this bike be both? This is probably the most publicized of the gearbox bikes and follows in the footsteps on the G2 downhill bike.

Zerode are currently on its second batch of the bikes and is working on an XL frame size as we speak – they must be popular!

Nicolai Ion GPI

Want to know how to make a Nicolai Geometron even more unusual? Just add a gearbox.

The Nicolai Ion GPI has monster angles and suspension with the Mojo magic applied to it making for a descending beast. The Pinion geabox has a ratio of 600 per cent (that’s great than SRAM Eagle) which should make it a handy climber too. It’s just a shame it uses gripshift!

Alutech Teibun Pinion

We recently featured Alutech for creating the world’s first 29 inch only production downhill bike, but that’s not the only trick up their sleeve. The Teibun is a Pinion-driven, long travel trail bike that looks the biz.

The Pinion is stealthily integrated and we think this is the most “normal” looking of any of the bikes here.

Musing Petrol 5P

Another German company putting some weight behind gearboxes. The Musing Petrol 5P is hand made in Westerwald and comes with a Pinion. It boasts 150mm of travel and can be specced to suit your needs thanks to Musing’s bike builder.
