15. URT Suspension Frames
15. URT Suspension Frames
Finally, but by no means least is the URT (or Unified Rear Triangle) suspension design. There have been a lot of bad suspension bikes over the years, enough to fill this list several times over, but it’s this URT design that stands above all others. It stemmed from the early days of full suspension and unfortunately it carried on for far too long. Those who didn’t believe full suss was the future kept on going on about how inefficient it was in terms of pedalling, and it was when done wrong. Some companies couldn’t get it right and so they decided to try and push the ‘non-active’ designs, ones that didn’t work all the time. Some completely locked out when pedalling, and URT’s simply didn’t really work unless you were sat down (because the bottom bracket is solidly fixed to the rear swingarm). Yeah, sounds completely ridiculous now, but many were sold on the idea at the time, and loads of bikes used this design. Believe it or not some poor sponsored DH riders had to use this Klein Mantra (which was effectively almost fully rigid when standing) as their team bike. This particular full build even comes complete with Girvin forks and Spinergy wheels, both of which were on our worst mountain bike products shortlist.
So there you have it, those were our choices. What other products do you think deserves to be in the Worst Mountain Bike Products list?
