Weeky Dirt #2: Mountain Bike News Roundup

UCI rule 1.2.019 on hold (again)

The UCI’s (Union Cycliste Internationale) controversial rule 1.2.019 (remember it from last year?), in which it is stated that UCI licence holders are not permitted to compete in non-UCI sanctioned events, has been put on hold for another season. Cycling’s governing body first attempted to roll out the ruling early in 2013, which some saw as a direct attack at small (and large for that matter) race promotors, to much furore. With a new President in the form of Brian Cookson, we hope that the most recent pause on the ruling is only temporary and that once he has attended to a massive list of (mostly drugs-related) matters at the UCI he will abolish such a ludicrous rule once and for all.

Chairlift enduro in the UK

Glencoe will host the enduro race.

That’s right folks, a chairlift-assist enduro race on British shores. Glencoe Mountain Resort will be hosting the Bluegrass Enduro Tour on 3-4 May.

On Sunday the 4th, we see the return of The Bluegrass Enduro Tour, which has a slightly new format, with the racing being totally blind. If you were ever lucky enough to take part in the Macavalanche, then you will know that even if you do practice at Glencoe, there are wee front wheel sized surprises all over the mountain that can just tip you over the edge! This all adds to the challenge of course, and we defy you not to be smiling at the bottom.

Cam McCaul on Fox 831 fork in great edit

American and star of Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus tour Cam gets out of bed roughly three hours earlier than the average freerider (well they’ve got the comedowns of savage energy drink abuse to deal with after all) and shows the diversity of Fox’s burly dirt jump fork as he takes it to the trail and the trails… What a great edit.

Tim Flooks back on the race circuit!

Tim Flooks (centre, black t-shirt) at the BoXXer Worlds.

Tim Flooks, of TF Tuned fame and once-pro level racer himself, is back on the racing circuit as he re-joins SRAM/RockShox, where he previously spent seven years as head of European Technical Race Support. SRAM will seriously up their level of support on the enduro racing scene for 2014.

Tim and SRAM tech crew will have the SRAM support vehicle at most major European Enduro events along with the full Enduro World Series offering rider support on all SRAM products. Tim will also be offering tech clinics at each event on Friday evenings showing riders how to get the most from their SRAM products.

Lapierre team news

Sam Blenkinsop.

Lapierre could be facing one of their strongest seasons on the World Cup Downhill circuit to date, with the young team re-signing Sam Blenkinsop for another year and Loic Bruni, who already stepped onto the podium in 2013, seemingly seriously hard at work while training in the southern hemisphere (as reported in last week’s news). Bruni also adds Red Bull to his sponsor list, the giant of extreme sports’ confidence in the French rider no doubt will aid in his rise to the very top.
