First Look – Cube Two15 HPA SL

The bigger, wilder brother of the Stereo and Fritzz

Premium aluminium – now lower in weight but still high on durability. How does the latest two15 hpa SL from Cube stack up against our benchmark aluminium DH bikes, the Orange 324Nicolai G19 and solid strike?

When we reviewed the previous Cube Two15 five years ago it was not only running on the (then standard) 26” wheels but was available in one frame size only and weighed in at just shy of forty pounds. With a wheelbase of 46.7”/1186mm and a 760mm handlebar, it shows how frame designs have progressed along with hardware preferences and specs too.

That first generation Two15 had great suspension performance, but with a price tag of £4199 had stiff competition from the new force of direct sales bikes from Europe such as Canyon’s Torque and YT’s Tues.

Fast forward to 2017 and this latest Two15 has progressed dramatically. With a much lower weight, three frame size options and 27.5” wheels, the Cube looks much more appealing visually and the components seem well chosen. It’s more up to date when it comes to both geometry, but how is the sizing? Have Cube moved this bike forward when compared to our benchmark DH bikes?

DESIGN DETAIL

It’s aluminium all the way as a frame material for the Two15 DH bikes (and frame only option) in Cube’s 2017 line up. Sharing the same four bar suspension design as the Fritzz, with carefully designed tubing eliminating unnecessary weight and bulk, this frame dishes out 215mm of rear travel. Cube use triple butted tubing on this frame, with very clean and unfussy lines. Very neat internal cable and hose routing furthers this approach and gives added protection.

The split seat tube design is still there, as is Cube’s FSP4 linkage, but it’s a whole lot tidier as well as lighter than the original version bearing the Two15 name. It was Fox on suspension duties back then, as it is now, with a 40 Factory fork and a DHX2 shock as standard on this higher spec SL version. Cube are suggesting that this SL model weighs in at 34 pounds (16.9Kg) – three pounds lighter than the cheaper Two15 Race model. We’ll need to do weigh in on this but it’s a chunk lighter than the original design.

GEOMETRY

A 63° head angle, 157x12mm rear hub spacing and a wheelbase of 1241mm (size L/20”) are big steps forward from that old 26” wheeled version, as is the the option of three frame sizes. However, frame dimensions and thinking have moved on rapidly and with riders often sizing up to longer bikes it would be easy to suggest the reach numbers even on the size Large (20”) Two15 are on the shorter side. 435/415/395mm (20/18/16” sizes) are looking short when compared to many up to date 2017 DH bikes.

A full test and comparisons with our benchmark bikes will cover this in more detail and we understand reigning national champion Greg Williamson, who was third to Hart and Bruni at the British series in Fort William yesterday has been on an XL bike for some time.

Test review follows in two weeks…..
