Wild Fantasies Part 3: Leogang

Tough decisions to be made to stay in the hunt!

Well, that’s Fort William done and we are straight into preparation for Leogang. *Insert your own London Busses joke here*

Congrats to Greg Minnaar on another win, he sure can still pull it out of the hat and blow everyone away with a run so perfect it was clear the race was won in Fort William with 18 riders left.

My team, Ron Swanson’s Bacon, fared pretty well again. I had a first, second and third within the team and I’m 252/8248 overall. The other two riders… well, let’s just say that they are on thin ice!

It is early, and there isn’t much news in the way of injuries that’ll force me to swap riders out. However, I get the feeling I’m riding my luck a little with my team structure so I thought I’d explore my options.

I’ve gone all–in with my team; Aaron Gwin, Rachel Atherton and Danny Hart cost 950k between them, so that’s 95% of my funds spent on just 60% of my racers. If one of them punctures, crashes or generally phones it in I’m screwed. It’s risky but as Dell Boy will tell you, “who dares wins”. The trouble is I’m daring, but I’m not winning.

So what would I do if I want to slosh the points around the team a bit?

My preferred option would be to replace Aaron (£350k/1460 points) and one of my 25k riders (0 points…) with two solid racers and hope that they both do well. Going by point totals so far and the upcoming races I’d go with Loris Vergier at 200k/555 points and Greg Williamson at 150k/587 points. They’ve both been consistent and they look like they could get on the podium at some point.

The trouble is, combined they don’t have the same points total as Aaron and I could quite reasonably expect a bigger points haul from the remaining races from the series leader.

To really spread the money out and improve on my expected points I’d need more than two transfers and therefore would need to make changes over two rounds. That means I need to have a clear idea now of what I want my team to look like for Lenzerheide in a month’s time.

An injury here or there can scupper that plan quickly so I’m sticking with my “all–in” approach, crossing my fingers and hoping the top riders stay fit and on their bikes. I’m also hoping my two 25k riders can pull their fingers out, pull off a surprise and push me up the league a bit.

How did the team get on at Fort William? Reviews below:

Rachel Atherton gets 9/9 for FW. The Brit has 9 wins in a row (!) and she is just owning downhill racing right now. The thought of replacing her is ludicrous right now.

Aaron Gwin gets 8/10. He is proving beatable at the races but with a second place and Loic out injured, his grip on the series overall is tightening and he is still worth 350k of my funds. As the man himself said on Instagram, he has a “colourful history”, at Leogang, so I can’t wait to see what is going to happen *insert your own joke about him winning without a chain/brakes/wheels here*.

Danny Hart did what I needed him to do and gets 8/10. Third place and a decent points haul is good enough for me. I’ve no reason to swap him out, so hopefully he’ll be a permanent fixture in the team and at 250k while sitting third overall in the series he is good value.

Gregoire Pazdziorko was a no show so gets 1/10. I assumed he’d travel to Scotland hoping to back up his 58th place from Lourdes, but I clearly made the wrong call again. He is getting the boot from the team so don’t be surprised to see him finish in the top 10 on Sunday!

Emyr Davies turned up at least, but didn’t qualify so it’s 3/10 for him. I’m going to swap him out of the team. Emyr, get your desk clutter in a cardboard box like in every sitcom ever and please don’t crap in my desk draw on your way out. *insert your own joke about Emyr going on to win the race here*.

I’ve no idea who I’m going to replace either of them with for now; given my success so far at the 25k price point I may as well just get my cat to tap the screen and go with whoever she gets closest to.

Bonus ratings:

4X stream on a sunny Saturday – 8/10. More of this please!

All the mooning on the trackside – 2/10. Less of this please! *insert your own “the mountain is full of crevices” joke here*

Top tip for the week:

Greg Williamson! 150k and a 16th and two 7th places so far. He seems to have been transferred into a few teams in the top 10 of the league too.

A note for racers: Don’t take any of this personally, it’s dog-eat-dog in the world of fantasy sports, I love you all really.

If I’ve talked you up and you do badly I haven’t cursed you, but if you think I have please complain to the editor.
