Next up in our series on bike shops is Pedalabikeaway who are based at Cannop in the Forest of Dean.
It’s a stones throw from the Dirt office and we’ve been regular visitors for years. Great shop, cafe, trails and uplift, what more could you want? Wild boar? They’ve got those too.
Here’s a few questions with the staff at the shop:
Who works at Pedalabikeaway? Jody, James (Lingy), Young Tom and an assortment of part timers.
Who’s your old timer? It has to be Lingy.
And who’s the best person to ask for if you’ve got a set of blown forks? Straight to Mojo.
How long have you been running for? No-one can remember…in excess of 20 years.
What are your main brands? Trek, Nukeproof, Fox, One Industries, Endura, Shimano, SRAM
What’s your biggest seller? Inner tubes…
What would you like to be your biggest seller? Inner tubes…great margin.
26, 27.5, or 29″….good thing or bad thing? Anything that gets people onto a bike has got to be a good thing.
And what’s the oldest/most random bit of stock you’ve got? Dave Evans…our wheel builder extraordinaire. (He might be old and random but is Dave Evans a bit of stock?!)
Who makes the best cup of tea? Definitely Tom
Who’s always rocks up late and hungover? Lingy (again)
What’s your favourite workshop tool? Probably the bearing press, or the lump hammer.
Have you got a race team? Yes, Pedalabikeaway/FlyUp Downhill are a bunch of local kids (of all ages) that are really ripping it up this year.
What question do you get asked most often? “Could you just have a quick look at my….?” Followed by: “Oh and also…”
Do you have a shop dog? Yes. Dizzee the Rascal.
Percentage of nice customers to nightmare ones? 99% nice…honestly.
On that note, any funny stories you can share with us? Only that a certain boyo from DirtHQ is continually leaving bikes with us and forgetting they are here.
What’s the best custom bike build you’ve done recently? Yeti SB66 Carbon which our favourite customer Steve leaves at the shop so we can all ride it…how good is that!
Any good tunes wafting over the shop airwaves? A vast variety streaming on Spotify…from old school jazz and blues to death thrash metal and some One Direction for Tom.
Staff toilet…Buckingham Palace or Trainspotting? Public loos are pretty good most days, though downhill race days are always an exception!
Best place to go riding locally? Outside the front door in the fabulous Forest of Dean
And finally, why should someone shop at your shop? Why go into town when you can get a ride in, eat great cake (or pies) and chat to our incredibly knowledgeable team about the local trails all at the same time. We keep a huge range of spares, accessories and clothing and can make most repairs while you wait.
