Quite what Specialized UK are doing in deciding not to bring in the two higher spec’d Big Hits is anyone’s guess, but even with its X–Fusion rear shock and forks this basic model is still an incredible bargain buy. There really isn’t a cheaper way into true DH capability, and even if you do eventually find yourself pushing the limits of the shock and fork the frame easily justifies some upgrading. The rest of the kit is great too, with some superb own–label soft compound tyres, a quality chain device, and even some wide bars with decent grips stuck on the ends. It really is incredible what you get for the money, but we have to admit that we’d be tempted to take a trip to anywhere else in Europe and buy one of the Fox and RockShox shod versions, which believe it or not, offer even greater value for money.
