Update your kitbag with a dose of Italian style

Fresh into Dirt HQ is a stack of new trail riding kit from Dainese, including the first of their 2016 Altitune range.

Dainese have been around since 1972 and know the score when it comes to kit for two-wheeled sports. With plenty of experience making armour and protective kit, attention to detail is high and this carries over to their range of clothing too. We’ve got a selection from their Altitune and Tec ranges along with the new premium Atmo-Lite jacket to check out.

DRIFTEC GLOVES

We like our gloves simple and uncluttered here at Dirt and these Driftec gloves from Dainese hit the spot for us. A stretch neoprene wrist (with a pull-on tab) does away with the usual Velcro closure and keeps things minimal and clean, a design brief that runs through this glove and much of this new kit from Dainese. Panels are kept to a minimum, with fewer seams to aggravate but enough stretch in the polyester fabric to give a good fit and unhampered movement. Lighter fabric between the fingers increased fit further. The palm fabric is a high quality synthetic suede with no seams running across it giving great feel and contact with the bars, although no padding – you’ll need to be happy with your grips for a touch of added comfort. Grip is also increased with silicone inserts on the palm.

Close fitting and well made, these Driftecs are for those who like a minimalist approach to their gloves.

TRAILTEC JERSEY

A superlight and close (but not tight) fitting jersey is what we have here with the Trailtec from Dainese. A featherweight yet robust polyester Dryide fabric with plenty of stretch is the used for the main body panels with a highly ventilated fabric on the side panels and a slight dropped hem at the rear. The shoulders and arms are a ¾ length and in a smoother rip-stop fabric, sitting close to the skin and giving good mobility. A well cut shape with no fuss, zips or pockets keeps bulk low and comfort high. This is a clean-cut jersey for fast trail rides in warm dry conditions.

TERRATEC SHORTS

Gone are the days of overbuilt shorts made from heavy and restrictive fabrics. Even brands with a pedigree in DH riding have seen the light and switched to quicker drying and more forgiving fabric on all but their heaviest-duty kit. For trail and enduro riding Dainese have these Trailtec shorts which fit very well into this current way of thinking. Cut for low bulk (as with their Trailtec jersey) these shorts start with a lightweight 4-way stretch fabric that’s both quick-drying, highly breathable yet very robust, with a rip-stop construction. Laser-cut perforations on the outer thigh add to venting even further. Fit is good for fast trail riding and with a inner hem length of 12.5” are on the shorter side for some riders. A well thought through detail is the stretch panel on the back of the lower legs improving pedalling comfort.

These shorts may be intentionally low on features but the construction is faultless with a high number of fabric panels giving a great fit all over. A broad waistband is lined with additional mesh at the rear to aid wicking of moisture and is adjusted with two side Velcro tabs. A small zipped pocket on the side is there for essentials but Dainese know the score and keep only the features that are essential when riding. Available in low-key black or one of the brighter colour options.
The Terratec shorts adhere to the ‘less is more’ approach to clothing design.

ATMO-LITE 3L JACKET

As a key piece of clothing from the new Dainese Altitune range, the Atmo-Lite is packed full of tech and design details.

The Atmo-Lite is a fully waterproof, windproof and highly breathable jacket made from D-Dry, a three layer laminated fabric with the clever technology in between the outer face material and the lining. It’s robust, machine washable and is built to withstand the hard use (and abuse) that comes with mountainbiking in all weathers. The fit of this jacket is well considered; shorter at the front, longer at the rear and with good articulation around the shoulders, giving unrestricted movement when riding out of the saddle. The arm length is also spot on too. The Atmo-Lite has a proper cut without it looking odd when off the bike.

Details are well thought through by the Dainese team, showing their experience in clothing design. A fixed hood (which sits under your helmet) is useful when the weather turns really nasty and has plenty of adjustment. Temperature control is taken care of via two zipped pit vents, sitting to each side of the jacket and not interfering with the straps from a pack. Laser-cut perforations sit below the armpit helping airflow further. A zipped chest pocket is useful for a phone or keys – this is the only storage as Dainese assume you’ll be more than likely using a backpack for carrying anything else. The colour choices are black, grey, blue or bright green.

A top quality jacket for your kitbag that covers all aspects of your riding through the four seasons in any terrain.
