RockShox Reverb 1x Remote

The wait is over...

The ROCKSHOX Reverb has been the benchmark dropper post for many years now. The update to longer stroke options last year was much needed but the control lever stayed the same – until now. The 1x under-bar Reverb lever has arrived.

The hydraulically operated Reverb was the first dropper post to offer internal routing through the frame with their ‘Stealth’ option. This, combined with the silky smooth operation, and numerous range of size and drop options has kept this RockShox post at the top of the dropper wish list for many riders. The original Reverb earned a place in the 2011 Dirt 100 line up and has been in this yearly ‘best products’ selection every year since then. SRAM got the design right at the beginning. It’s been a case of steady evolution of the original concept and now with the post in its third generation it’s damn near perfect. All except for the control lever design, which was starting to feel a touch dated and ergonomically compromised when compared to some of the cable operated ‘under bar’ designs from other brands.

Well here it is – for all those riders with a single ring transmission and space under the bars on the left – the Reverb 1x remote.

WHAT DO SRAM/ROCKSHOX SAY ABOUT THIS NEW 1X REMOTE?

‘The all-new Reverb remote pairs the superior ergonomics of SRAM’s shifter design with low-lever-force hydraulic actuation to create the world’s best dropper-post remote. Its excellent ergonomics and light touch mean that riders of all ability levels can use their Reverb posts quicker, more easily and more often, for better ride control everywhere on the trail. And the new Reverb 1x Remote’s Bleeding Edge™ fitting ensures that the periodic maintenance needed for optimum performance is about as hassle-free as working the remote itself’.

FIRST RIDE IMPRESSIONS – WHAT DO WE THINK?

We’ve spent two days riding the new remote and have come away impressed. With SRAM making the move to 1x transmissions at all price points now it’s only natural that the free space on the left side of the bars has left them with the option to completely redesign the Reverb lever.

SRAM is all about integration, whether it’s the transmission or the contact points and controls such as the shift levers or the brake levers. The original Reverb lever integrated with SRAM’s MMX (Match Maker X) lever/shifter clamp and most of us ran a ‘right hand’ lever upside down under the bar on the left on bikes with 1x transmissions. It worked well, but the Reverb control was often a touch too far inboard when the brake lever blade was set to fall in an ideal place for single finger braking.

This has all been taken on board by SRAM and the end result is a very pleasing remote, with a strong take on their shift lever design. Two years of development has led to an exceptionally refined and ‘all new’ component. The paddle lever very much mirrors a SRAM shifter in shape, just a touch more concave where the thumb contacts. It has the same pivot point as a their shifters too – so if you’re running this new remote with a SRAM drivetrain there’s a real feeling of a complete system, fully integrated. With a much more durable and less vulnerable lever assembly there’s much less chance of damage. A neat rubber sleeve covers both the return speed adjustment dial and the much improved ‘Bleeding edge’ bleed port. It’s very tidy, sleek and well thought through.

SRAM say that we’ll all use the lever more frequently, getting the true benefit from the post. On the trail it was hard to disagree with this statement – the lever was easily placed on the bars where you could operate it without moving your hand. Integrated with the SRAM brake lever via the MMX mount left a clean looking bar set up. The lever blade of the brake sat in the right place for one finger braking and the Reverb remote was in a bang on position for activation without the need to shuffle you hand position on the grips. Ergonomic perfection with a clean design.

The smooth action of the Reverb post and the subtle, light action and controllable operation of the new 1x lever design work well together. Small adjustments to the height of the post are now easier with a tweak of the lever. The return action of the post is refined too – without the clunky action of many droppers. It’s a very user friendly design.

This new Reverb 1x remote has us asking what more we could want from this dropper. It’s a super clean design that addresses ergonomics, feel, durability, and adjustment also adding in SRAM’s easier Bleeding edge technology as a bonus. If you’re running a current Reverb and a 1x transmission there’s a very strong chance you’ll want to upgrade to this new remote lever. The aftermarket Reverb post with this lever as standard is still realistically priced and competes keenly with all the premium droppers out there.

This refinement to the Reverb has just nudged the bar up up again – is this still is the dropper to beat? Time will tell, but our experience with this new 1x remote so far is so very positive.
