ODI ELITE GRIPS

ODI were first with lock-on grips and they really were a game changer. Back in the early days before them we were gluing or wiring grips to our bars to help them stay in place.

Wet weather and wear and tear got the better of most designs and spinning grips were a problem.

ODI make grips and little else (apart from bar and stems) including motocross, snow and water vehicles too. They are specialists in grips, no question. These ODI Elite Series Grips are the latest in what ODI can offer and are packed with great design details. We featured them in the 2016 Dirt 100 and they’re back again this year.

The double collar lock-on grips that ODI developed were an instant winner from the start. Here was a grip that came in many designs and colours and stayed in place regardless of the conditions. Grips like the ODI Ruffian, Rogue and TroyLeeDesigns models soon became well-loved favourites and a very common sight on our personal bikes here at Dirt HQ.

‘A key element to these grips is the offset grip design giving more padding on the top, where it’s needed, and less below’

Times have moved on though, and many other brands started developing slimmer, lighter grips with a single inboard locking collar. These were more comfortable in many cases, as you could ride on the ends of the bars without a collar digging in. Early models weren’t faultless though. The single collar wouldn’t grip on some carbon bars and the slimmer grips were often lacking in comfort especially after a day out on the hill. ODI are back, offering a solution to all these issues with their new Elite series of grips.

The three model range (Motion, Flow and Pro) are all designed around a single collar design (with larger 3mm bolt heads) that locks onto all bars in the secure way we have come to expect from ODI. They are reinforced at the ends for added crash durability. Dimensions are: Motion 130mm x30mm, Flow 130mm x 31mm, Pro 130mm x 32mm. A key design element is the offset grip design: here ODI have given you more padding on top of the grip, where it’s needed, and less below. This keeps the bulk of the grip low and the comfort high. A clever detail, that works well out on the trail.

Riders’ preferences vary and ODI are keen to offer choice with the new Elite grips. All three models use ODI’s Soft Pro rubber compound for good shock absorption but have different patterns and diameters. They are all around 10% lighter than the previous double collared grips too.

We love the Flow grip, a mid size diameter with a knurled surface (much like the classic Ruffians) and a moto style waffle on the underside. The Flow gives great control in the wet yet stays in place on the bars, giving just the right comfort on a long travel bike. ODI are back with a winner.
