Trail and Enduro Bikes

When we heard that Nicolai were building a World Cup bike based on their brash Geomotron, we expected a behemoth. What Jack Reading brought round to the office at the end of the summer turned out to be relatively … conventional.

But maybe that’s an unfair comparison. While the reach on this is 10mm shorter that even the shortest Geometron, there’s still roughly 15mm worth of daylight between it and the likes of the Sender, Glory and Fury of the same size. It’s also slacker than all than a lowest setting Mondraker Summum with a 61.5° head angle.

It is longer in the rear too and visibly stretched out – there are times you need a hot hatch and times you need a limo. On today’s high-speed, rough, bike parky courses, there’s a definite advantage to Jack’s longer wheelbase. But then, it took its first big win at the final round of the BDS at Llangollen, one of the twistier tracks out there.

“This is one of the few bikes we believe to be a ‘correct’ size large

Despite being the biggest production downhill bike, it only comes with 193mm travel, a bit down on the conventional 200, and apparently Chris Porter thinks it should be even less.

In our opinion, this is one of the few bikes we believe to be a ‘correct’ size large that reveals the continued inconsistency within the bike industry regarding sizing – it’s a large, it should fit people who are six foot tall.

Throw away the spreadsheet though and take a look at what’s in front of you. One of the finest finished aluminium downhill bikes in the world. There’s no doubt it’s a bit of a weighty beast, even Jack’s race bike was pushing 40lbs, but the debate about how light a downhill bike needs to be will no doubt roll on for years.

With full Fox damping, there’s no worries about suspension here – especially as it comes pre-tuned by the fine folks at Mojo. Further British input comes from Hope who provide the wheels and hubs (easily the best sounding of any bike here). Finally Stockport’s Renthal provide the bar of choice to keep this monstrous ride in check.

So there you have it, a downhill bike that truly proves big is beautiful.
