Kore Stronghold Chainrings

New colourful cogs for your drivetrain

Decade Europe have sent us Kore’s ‘Narrow/Wide’ Stronghold chainrings to test. There’s plenty of choices out there now, where once there was just one option. We check out these new Stronghold rings to see if they live up to their name.

We’ve seen a big shift to single chainring transmissions on trail and enduro bikes over the last few years and in the 2016 Dirt 100 there isn’t a single bike running a double or triple chainset. Many frames are being designed around a single ring set up (with no provision for a front mech) and cheaper ‘1X’ transmissions such as the newly launched Sram NX helps to keep the price down.

So, what are we looking for in a ‘Narrow/Wide’ chainring?

Good chain retention is the obvious one, so you can ditch the chain device if you’re running a clutch rear mech. Durability in filthy conditions is a priority too as you’re not sharing the wear with other chainrings. Strength needs to be good, especially if your not running a lower bash plate, as the ring is likely to take some knocks from rocks and root. Also, chainline needs to be considered, especially with newer ‘Boost’ hub spacings with brands now offering offset rings to give an improved chainline and a quieter transmission.

The Strongholds use a patented ‘hooked tooth’ design. Kore suggest that this grabs the chain and holds it better around the chainring, yet doesn’t hamper the release either. There are grooves machined just below where the chain sits to help with the release of mud, therefore reducing both noise and wear.

Kore’s Stronghold chainrings are CNC machined from 7075 T6 aluminium and are anodized in a good range of colours. They offer a great range ring of sizes with both Sram direct mount and 104PCD fittings and will run with 9,10 and 11 speed transmissions.

We need to put some miles in on these chainrings. There are many brands out there all with similar claims and at varying prices, so with the trails still mucky we’ll put these Kore rings straight in at the deep end…
