Production Privee are famous for two things; 1) Gorgeous hardtails and 2) Love of classic racing cars. Their new bike keeps the racing heritage but moves in a totally new direction – the brand’s first full suss.
The Shan No.5 is a single pivot, steel, 138mm travel bike. This makes it fairly similar to our Bike of the Year contender the Starling Murmur – a very good thing. The PP boys are hoping this will be a simple thrasher, much like their hardtails but in a more forgiving package.
The bike is deigned to house a fork between 140 and 160mm of travel and will house 27.5″ and 27.5+ wheels (max tyre width 2.8″) and we assume this means 29 inch wheels could be bodged in if needed. Basically, there’s a lot of versatility going on here.
With simplicity in mind, PP have tried to tune the leverage to be as linear as possible. However a shock extender gives progressiveness at the end of the travel. The suspension can therefore be adjusted for lots of sensitivity at the start of its travel, without bottoming out, and ensuring that 100% of the available travel is used.
But where does the racing car connection come in? Firstly the CroMo construction is the same as has been used in the chassis of many top race cars. Secondly is the Bahama Yellow colour scheme chosen as an homage to the 60s Porsche 911 UK from SINGER. The first 50 frames will be manufactured in this colour with a special price of €1,899.
