Hope Cranks
Finally! Well almost, Hope have just about got their cranks ready after 7, yes 7 years of development. As with their Eternity seat post they are happy to admit there was no rush to get these cranks out of the door. I think every year I have been to Eurobike I’ve seen these in one iteration or another. Having been through multi-discipline testing as well as using the latest Finite Element Analysis technology the Barnoldswick bunch have their cranks ready.
Visually these cranks are a step in the smoother direction with less changes in the surface angles than some previous versions. With such an extended design process Hope have managed to build in some neat features. They are deeply scalloped on the rear of the crank arm and machined down to be stiff whilst remaining light.
Aside from being some tidy looking cranks they feature a unique axle/crank arm interface that has been developed to run with most combinations of bottom brackets and chainring setups. You can run Hope’s new spline mounted chainrings or use a single ring with the ability to accommodate a bash guard.
ALMOST READY
We were told these aren’t quite the production version though, a last minute (yesterday) decision means they will now use a splined axle rather than the poly shape they have on show here at Eurobike.
We’ve decided to go down the splined route as that lends itself to carbon cranks in the future – Alan Wetherill, Hope
Hope two prototypes one and they are thinking about the future though. The plan is to make these cranks in carbon and a splined system in their eyes works better, we’re just hoping these don’t take another 7 years!
