Wyn Masters may be the wheelie king of mountain biking, but he’s just been trumped by 12-time Motorcycle Trials World Champion Dougie Lampkin who rode the 37.7 mile Isle of Man TT course on his back wheel.
Setting off from the grandstand, the attempt took Lampkin one hour and thirty five minutes at an average speed of 24 miles per hour. Strong winds looked like they might scupper Lampkin’s seven months of training, but he kept his head down over the mountain tops and pushed through to finish the run.
The wheelie was filmed live on Red Bull TV and trended on Twitter. Lampkin said: “It feels fantastic. The last 15 seconds were really lovely. The rest of it was a challenge! I feel absolute massive relief, the build up to it, seven months of planning, everything that’s gone on, like the nightmare with the weather yesterday and still strong winds today on top of the mountain – I was just hanging on really. It wasn’t over until a couple of metres from the end but that last couple of metres was just amazing.”
