It’s not out of the ordinary for one of the world’s best not to get hold of the rainbow jersey at some point in their career. Indeed many, many World Cup winners failed to achieve this. Of course it’s also the subject of possibly one of the classic, most agonising voyages in downhill history – the haunting 17-year battle that Steve Peat took to achieve his dream. Which he finally did at the age of 35.
