Fabien Barel won the thrilling Maribor World Cup DH race today with a time of 3:03.33 just 0.71 ahead of last years winner Sam Hill. The win is pretty remarkable given the wobbly nature of Fabien’s knee at the moment after his big pre season smash in South Africa. Barel said he didn’t expect to do so well on this physically demanding course and had to dig really deep on the lower sections.
Hill described a few twitchy moments which cost him valuable time on a track that really suited the Specialized rider.
Minnaar looked happy with 3rd spot from a 9th place in qualifying. Justin Leov was also stoked with another podium that moves him up to 6th in the overall.
Brendan Fairclough said he was happy with his second podium this year, even though it was through the misfortune of Peat and Gee.
Steve Peat was up on Barel’s split time and appeared to be heading for the hot seat but a puncture in the woods after the fire road section cruelly robbed him of a podium. Did he flat two years ago at Maribor as well?
Fastest qualifier and last man down Gee Atherton was up at the first split and a fraction down on the second, the huge finish line crowd were glued to the big screen. Disaster struck as Gee binned it in the woods throwing away a chance of a much needed win.
