Money from the Stevie Smith Legacy Fund will be spent on a community bike park in nanaimo, where Smith himself learnt to ride his bike.

Smith had always dreamed of building a bike park for his home town and it seems that the kind donations of his fans have finally allowed that dream to become a reality. The currently unnamed bike park will form an expansion to the Marie Davidson BMX track in Beban Park. Darren Berrecloth and Gabe Fox have already visited the site of the park and greenlit plans for a dirt jump line, a pump track and a skills trail.

Michelle Corfield, the founder of the Stevie Smith Legacy Fund, was inspired to spend the donations on the bike park after she saw a memorial lap of the BMX track in Stevie’s honour. She told Nanaimo News: “We want to create a bike park that youth in Nanaimo can go to and enjoy, and those that come to us from other parts of the world can enjoy too.

“Everybody needs a place to go and to think and be grounded and reflect. I think this is the place that friends and supporters of Steven’s can come and have a ride and think about him and his training ground, because he grew up on the BMX track next door.”

It has been agreed the park will be named after the late World Cup Champion, although an exact title has not been finalised. The budget for the project is $300,000- $400,000 to be split between the local council and the Gyro Club of Nanaimo, with the Foundation to cover the “soft costs”.
