Shimano have introduced a new XTR rear mech called the Shadow which includes a clutch ‘stabiliser’ system which is designed to almost completely remove chain slap.
Our tech editor ED H who is at the Sea Beaver festival in the US right now tested the mech earlier this year and still can’t quite fathom out how it works.
The Shadow system allows small amounts of movement to accommodate chain growth but that’s it, apart from the benefits of reducing clattering chain slap noise, it also means that over the rough stuff far your far less likely to lose your chain at the front.
A switch turns off the system to allow the removal of the rear wheel.
We expect the Shadow to be available around June this year.
