Passion Wagons: Wyn Masters and Rangi

Part one in a new series that looks at the cars, vans, buses that we use to transport our bicycles around in.

First up is New Zealander Wyn Masters and his car Rangi.

So this is my car which is nicknamed Rangi. It’s a 1990 Toyota Sprinter with a 1.5 engine, the name is mainly due to the rough look of him, in New Zealand if something is Rangi then it’s pretty rough or a bit dodgy so really it was a fitting name.

I have owned the car for 4.5 years now which surprises everyone really as it also only has 160,000km on the clock but the exterior looks like it has done a million!

I originally brought it from an ex-girlfriend and managed to get a sweet deal for 600 bucks!!!
(about 310 quid in UK money)

Back then the car looked a whole lot sharper and it was before he even inherited the name Rangi. But after only a week of ownership I was driving back from a race and had picked up some guys on a late flight from the airport, so had been awake probably 26hrs, and managed to nod off at 100kmh which wasn’t ideal. I estimate we probably drove a couple of kilometres before the road turned we crossed the centre line and woke up to a bang!

Pretty much it was as lucky as it could of been, I hit a bridge and grinded along the side of it for a while before getting it back on the road, but he still took a fair bit of damage so I guess that was the day he became Rangi!

Since then there have been many a moment. My brother Eddie did the latest one by driving Rangi in to a pole, wrecking what was the good side, so now I guess he has some good character!

He also now has probably well over 500 stickers so I guess they hold him together!

His fastest speed would be 180kmh but that was in his heyday I wouldn’t get close to that these days, he’s just a cruiser now. He does the occasional uplift session and has been around New Zealand many a time with all the boys and bikes loaded up, if only he could talk there would be many a story to be told!

His record load is seven bikes as pictured earlier, five on the bike rack with two bike boxes on top!

Also pictured is the latest mission he did down to Queenstown last week.

Cheers,
