There is a lot going on this weekend, the World Cup in the US being the main one, but don’t forget the Mega out in France.
Rowan Sorrell gives us the low down on what has happened so far:
It’s Mega weekend in Alp d’Huez and as ever there are lots of Brits out to take on the infamous event, some seasoned competitors, others popping their Mega cherry in what is surely one of the biggest and craziest races in the world. The whole week before the Mega there is plenty going on with people practicing the long Mega and the separate shorter qualifier courses or taking part in the other events and races put on like the new Enduro race in Vaujany and the well-established Sprint Avalanche Downhill event in Oz en Oisans. Brits have been holding their own with Joe Barnes and James Shirley taking a one, two in the Enduro and Joe Flanagan getting second with some old Dirt correspondent taking fourth in the downhill!
Today was the Mega qualifier runs which take place on a predominantly downhill trail (around 21-22mins) with six Brits qualifying for the front row of the main event and four on the second row, which has to be a record. The usual big players are all through without any real dramas so they’ll be lining up alongside Vouilloz, Wildhaber, Absalon, Clementz, Armour, Balaud, Andre, etc.
It’s the ladies and the men’s second race tomorrow, with the men’s main event on Sunday taking place on the new Mega trail with less climbing than before. Anne Caro has been looking outstanding and she set an incredible time to win the ladies qualifier with Anka Martin putting in a great run to take second place. They’ll be hitting the glacier racing at 9am sharp tomorrow and there’s very little snow this year – 6 metres less on the glacier than last year apparently!
