Frenchwoman Sabrina Jonnier silenced the home crowd by taking the victory here in a dry Fort William today from British rider Rachel Atherton.
Jonnier said that she had made ‘too many mistakes’ but when the clocked stopped she finished 1.11 seconds ahead of Atherton. I think it is safe to say that the crowd thought that Atherton had the win in the bag after being ahead at the final split, but she lost a big chunk of time on the final ‘motorway’ section. The crowd fell silent, and there was a slight air of disbelief at what had just happened. Take nothing away from Jonnier though, it was a solid run and she clearly had ‘gas in the tank’ when it mattered most.
Pugin was +4.87 seconds back in third just ahead of fourth place Tracy Moseley (+4.89). Ragot rounded out the top five 9.05 seconds behind the winner.
Jonnier takes over as series leader from Atherton and Pugin.
Junior rider Manon Carpenter had another great race with an amazing 8th place.
