The tribute train, the Stevie Smith memorial run, Peaty’s farewell, Martyn Ashton’s World Cup run, the barmy crowd and the hectic racing. Fort William 2016 has to go down as one of the all time great World Cups.
We’ve no idea how they managed to fit it all into one weekend but the Nevis Range put on one hell of a show and its been rightfully awarded the best World Cup of the year prize.
The prize is voted for by UCI stakeholders and is given out annually. Last year it was won by Lourdes, but this year the prize returned to Scotland.
The UCI said: “This legendary spot in the Scottish Highlands wins the “best event” vote for 2016. Also host of the 2007 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships, Fort William organised a World Cup stopover for the 15th time this year. Several times winner of the “best event” award, the Scottish destination again won over the voters thanks to its course, large crowds, unique atmosphere, watertight organisation and team facilities: in summary, a fantastic promotion for the discipline.”
here’s to another great day (with hopefully more scorching weather) next year!
Let’s look at some of the highlights of this year’s event.
