If you didn’t already know then Falmouth in Cornwall is getting a brand new 4X track, and with Will Evans being the man responsible for designing and making it we should be in for a treat. He’s now been reshaping the Cornish landscape for about three weeks (give or take a few days lost to the weather) and it’s already looks to be shaping up nicely.

Anyway, enough from me, here’s an update on progress courtesy of Will himself and photographer Rick Davy…

Falmouth 4x track

As with other 4x tracks that I have built corners are key! So first off I wanted to create a track with as many plus 90 degree corners as possible without eating up the gradient.

I believe 4x racing is all about the corners, whether its race tactics or corner speed. Corners create all the action, Afan 4x track in south Wales is a prime example of lots of corners= good racing and maximum fun!

The new Falmouth 4x track has 11 corners in total, 4 of which are flat turns. I am pleased with how it’s shaping up and can’t wait to ride it.

I’ve kept the gradient as much as possible to try and encourage the use of brakes, as I also think this also a major factor in racing 4x that is missing in many of the UK tracks.

The entire track is roll able (very slowly) but generally is aimed at taking UK 4x to the next realistic level, at times I have had to tame things down and found myself smiling in the digger at particular sections. Hopefully #fal4x track will push the UK rider’s abilities as well as create some great racing right to the finish line.

The track incorporates all aspects of 4x from large and fast straights and burms to slower more technical flat turns and rock drops. It has a proline (not built yet) with a huge scrub mound entry, so fast corning skills are key as opposed to straight-line pedalling, however the non pro line is no easy option with rocks, drops and jumps, both sections should produce some great action.

Track aside the most significant things with the new track is it venue and club; The track is located on a well established campsite (www.pennancemill.co.uk) only five minutes from two south coast beaches and Falmouth itself and there is also a decent bike shop only two miles away (www.falmouthcycles.com).

But the best thing is the opening of a new club (www.carrickriders.org.uk) and venue for not only the national 4x circuit, but also the locals. The Cornish scene is buzzing at the moment and there is plenty of new interest too, which is great for the sport and discipline of 4x.
