Young Rippers bikes: Oskar’s Kona Stinky

Check out ten year old Oskar White’s pimped Kona Stinky.

It’s great seeing the groms shredding on bikes, they are the future champs of the sport.

Adam White sent over details of the Kona Stinky he built up for his son, Oskar. What’s becoming apparent with this series of articles is that it does seem hard to find suitable bikes and suspension for our young shredders these days. I reckon there’s definitely a gap in the market for someone to produce affordable well set up bikes for the groms.

After reading Ian’s article I thought I’d send some info in on my 10 yr old son Oskar’s DH bike, a 2011 Kona Stinky 2-4 .

Both my sons are involved in DH racing, my other son Jackson is 14 and has a Kona Operator also upgraded but probably not to the same extent.

Out of the box the bikes suspension wasn’t suitable for such a small and light rider. When we bought it, it was debatable whether the bike or child was heavier.

The 2004 Boxxers which Jackson had used on a previous bike were picked up second hand and came with super soft springs and Mojo modified. The travel was adjusted down to try and match in with the short travel rear suspension.

We tried an air shock (Fox Float r) on the rear without much success. Sufficient air for a supple ride would bottom out too easy on landings and big drops, bump the pressure up to cope with the drops and the back end would skip around over rough ground.

In the end we managed to pick up a Manitou Metel coil shock and a 250lb spring which seems to work okay, although it has recently undergone a rebuild.

As far as the rest of the modifications go they have gradually been added to the bike as Christmas/Birthday presents, saved pocket money or as in the case of the 10sp gear, race winnings.

We also transformed another Stinky into Oskar’s idea of an XC bike – single ring and bars wider than what would be reasonably expected to fit between two trees on an average XC track and a Giant MTX 225, his dirt jumper.

Oskar raced the Giant in his first DH season as an 8 year old!
