Pros pay tribute to legendary mechanic Chris ‘Monkdawg’ Vasquez

A tragic loss

After the high of the World Cup from Mont Sainte Anne on the weekend, the world of downhill woke up to some tragic news on Monday. legendary mechanic Chris ‘Monkdawg’ Vasquez had tragically passed away.

Monkdawg had been suffering with ill health for a number of months and, despite the mountain bike community raising over $18,000 to help with his care, he died peacefully on August 7 at the age of 46. Monkdawg was a legendary mechanic and has wrenched for the like of Missy Giove, Brian Lopes, Aaron Gwin and Brook MacDonald since he joined the World Cup circuit in 1995.

Vasquez was a much loved figure in the World Cup pits with his ‘Monk Truths’ entertaining and educating many riders. His loss was felt heavily and here are some heart felt tributes from those who knew him best:

Brian Lopes

Sad to hear that this great guy 'Monk' is no longer with us…. A true character and a big part of MTB history has been lost… He was the mechanic to so many of the world's best riders and it was a pleasure to work alongside him for 3yrs with Trek.. Thanks for all your help over the years Monk, thanks for teaching me not to sit on the steps of the truck when a mechanic's at work, as I was always in your way !! I'll miss posting you your yearly shipment of Yorkshire tea…!! Rest in peace 'fool' XX #legend #monkdawg

Double rainbows over MSA reminds me of good times with Monk, he will be sorely missed. The world needs more characters like him, selfless to a fault.
