We Were There – A Photobook by Sandy Carson

Keeping the art alive

Sandy Carson is an absolute dude and he’d like your help… or for you to support his book!

Sandy is a living BMX legend, he’s even been name checked in Neighbours (the pinnacle of his career). He’s been a photographer for a long time now and is currently crowd funding for his new book, ‘We Were There’, a photography book documenting concert crowd fans from the pit. Austin, Texas, 2007-2017. NOt your usual MTB fare, but some of you guys might be all over it. Here’s what Sandy has to say:

“I began this project in 2007 while shooting live music commissions for different publications. I have attended and have documented around 3000 concerts ranging from hip hop and electronica to heavy metal, punk rock, pop and everything in between. The project grew organically as a natural offshoot to event photography and I ultimately became fascinated by the sea of die hard fans packed tightly against each other in the front row like sardines. Given my proximity to the bands and performers, I naturally turned my camera on their fans’ ball of energy and the youth culture music experience that revolves around concerts.”

“We Were There is a hardcover book dedicated to concert fandom, shot over a decade in Austin, Texas 2007-2017. This project explores the symbiotic relationship between rock concert fans, the bands, and myself, the photographer at music festivals. It is also a self-portrait of a music fan, musician, and photographer, who has been on both sides of the stage, barrier, and photo pit. Without the band there are no fans; without the fans, there is no band. One just cannot exist without the other! I’ve done my fair share of cramming down the front, playing onstage and now, after 10 years I’m ready to make a book for the fans.”
