Trail and Enduro Bikes

Trek Remedy 9.9 Race Shop Limited

How do you solve the wheelsize/travel enduro debate? For Trek, the answer lies in having one bike dedicated to 29 (the Slash) and one to 27.5 (the Remedy). In fact, they’ve solved it so well that both these bikes grace this year’s 100.

It’s no surprise the Trek Remedy is here of course, it’s already won plaudits as our trail bike of the year in 2015 and it made last year’s 100 too. This year’s model is brand new though and 150mm of travel front and rear will put it in the crosshairs of any potential buyers in the UK. With a 477mm reach, 1231mm wheelbase, 65.5 head angle and 339mm bottom bracket the numbers are bang on too – it’s worth noting the top end 9 series comes specced with longer Lyrik 160mm fork which, in effect, makes it slacker but a shade higher.

“As you would expect from Trek, the finish and kit is impeccable”

One thing that hasn’t changed is the grip on offer. The Fox damper may have been replaced with a new RockShox Deluxe but the phenomenal bite remains – especially in wet conditions. We think it needs a slightly more delicate touch than some of the more muscle bound dampers out there but you can still load the rear wheel when needed.

As you would expect from Trek, the finish and kit is impeccable. Yes, six grand is a lot of money for a pushbike but if you’re going to spend it, use this as a yardstick for the quality you can expect.

Eagle is now standard on most bikes in this category and really it should be. It’s easy to mock the gargantuan big ring but there will only be one person laughing when the going gets really steep. Already boosted with a 148mm rear hub and 110mm front the Remedy is shod with Bontrager’s excellent Elite wheelset, SE4 tyres and the impressive new Dropline seatpost with such an easy action lever

But there’s more to Trek bikes, and this is also where the brand scores over basic bikes. The detail, the bits that cost a touch more to produce yet that give a performance advantage – ABP, Knock Block steerer, great chain/frame protection, E2 steerer, Mino Link and a fully loaded build.

“An easy-to-ride, upbeat and very capable bike”

Because we’re journalists and we’re supposed to criticise things, we’d say that the bar isn’t quite to our liking, but that’s praising with a faint damn, this really is an unbelievable piece of kit.

Trek Remedy 9.9 Race Shop Limited

If you asked us to pick between this and the Slash we really would struggle. For pure speed in UK conditions we love the 29 inch wheels but as an easy-to-ride, upbeat and very capable bike you can’t go far wrong with the Remedy.
