Transition Patrol Carbon 2

The Transition Patrol is racking up the accolades and quickly becoming a bit of an mtb media darling (this is its second year in the Dirt 100). Given their success, it’s hard to believe how small a company Transition still are. Their range is only ten bikes deep and they still find time for road trips, making silly edits and, of course, riding in the Washington woods they call home.

They’re growing fast though and don’t intend to stay as the minnows-punching-above-their-weight much longer. No matter what happens we’re sure that the sense of fun will remain in both the way they conduct their business and in the character of their bikes.

The heart of this bike is the GiddyUp suspensions system that features on all Transition’s trail bikes. They call it “the ultimate suspension layout for boosting, roosting, and schlepping” and when you ride it, you realise they’re probably not far wrong.

This is paired with great numbers. Tall people design these bikes and for us at Dirt that’s a God send. It’s not the longest trail bike out there but it runs the likes of the Sanction very close. There are different seat tube angles for each size frame and a super low bottom bracket, making it calculated in the corners. The low-centered weight provides phenomenal grip, you can literally rip up turf as you carve.

“One of our favourite 150-160 bikes just got better”

New on last year is the addition of a metric sized Super Deluxe shock – something that’s fitted as standard across all but one of the carbon and aluminium builds of this bike. We’re still adjusting to the new shocks but we’ve done enough riding on them to know it’s a step forward for RockShox over the overly sensitive, almost nervy Monarch, we’re just not quite sure by how much.

The Lyrik it’s paired with isn’t quite as supple as the Fox 36 but it’s still a brute of a fork that will capably tackle anything the UK can throw at you. You’re going to have to head to big mountains abroad to really pick the two of them apart.

“Carbon has only exacerbated the already lively ride of the aluminium pony”

The rest of the spec is great. There’s the customary switch to Eagle for the top model but any of the 1x systems on offer are now superbly refined. RaceFace and ANVL components are lightweight and robust too and always get a respectful nod from us.

Of course, the biggest change is the addition of carbon over the aluminium bike that we tested last year. The carbon has only exacerbated the already lively ride of the aluminium pony. The lines may be smoother but they are the same. One of our favorite 150-160 bikes just got better.
