Calibre Bossnut V2

A hugely important mountain bike

The cheapest bike in this year’s Dirt 100, in fact, the cheapest bike since we had hardtails in there. The Calibre Bossnut is a very significant bike and has totally changed how we look at the market.

The thing is, a bike for under £1,000 simply shouldn’t be this good. How can it be when it’s not carbon, has no gold components and doesn’t weigh as much as a multipack of beans? Unless maybe, just maybe, fit, geometry and a sensible spec sheet are really at the heart of what makes a great mountain bike.

So we come to the Calibre Bossnut. Potentially the worst named bike in a while, but one hell of a ride. Strip away everything and you have a great frame. Roomy, long and complemented by a sorted cockpit.

SPECIFICATION

The kit on the Calibre Bossnut has been so carefully and expertly chosen. A RockShox Monarch damper is more than enough to keep the rear end under control. The gears just work, yes it’s not fashionable to spec anything smaller than a steering wheel on the rear wheel but it you want to get up any decent hill at this price, 2x is what you’re likely to be running.

The brakes are basic Shimano Deore but they’re among our favourite this year, we never could have dreamed at this performance for such a low price in years gone by.

The rest of the kit is exactly what is needed on this bike, robust, affordable and appropriate. The result is that this bike will hold its own against the clock in a stacked field of bikes, seriously.

Are there downsides? Yes, the most glaring omission is a dropper post. Sure it doesn’t take long to put your seat down but we’re so used to the ease of an adjustable seatpost that this should certainly be your first upgrade. What else? It probably won’t get the most admiring looks on top your car… that’s probably it.

Sorted suspension, bang-on-the-money geometry, under £1,000. In the mountain bike world, this is a hugely, hugely important bike.
