SPECIALIZED 2FO FLAT PEDAL SHOE

Specialized’s 2FO (Foot out, Flat out) range of trail and gravity footwear is a few seasons old now and the tweaks they have made along the way have resulted in a great shoes design.

With a history in biking footwear that runs well over twenty five years, Specialized has no excuses when it comes to producing the best footwear, whether you are clipping in or running flats.

When it comes to running flat pedals the main talking point is usually grip – but there is more to a shoe than just this essential quality. Low weight, construction, shape and foot support along with a quick drying time are also important areas to consider.

This 2FO flat pedal shoe takes into consideration all of the above and adds Specialized’s long-standing Body Geometry fit and foot bed design into the mix. This fit system is ergonomically designed and scientifically tested to boost power, increase efficiency, and reduce chance of injury by optimising hip, knee, and foot alignment. All good news if you’re out on the trails for many hours of pedalling.

‘These 2FO shoes are built to last and have held up well to being used and abused week in, week out’

So, what’s the sole like? The SlipNot rubber compound grips well; it’s maybe not the stickiest and certainly not as grippy as Stealth S1, but with more than enough control and adhesion when matched to our favourite flat pedals. Directional ‘shark-skin’ forefoot tread pattern adds grip on the pedals, while the open hex pattern provides walking traction to the heel area.

The 2FOs sole has an injection-moulded toe kick, anti-tear toe, and high-side cuff for lightweight protection from trail debris and rocks. We’ve found the height of the sole to be a touch higher than other brands (but not a real problem but you may notice it) and prototypes of future models that we’ve been testing have addressed this.

The upper of these Specialized shoes is a smooth, thermo-bonded synthetic material, for lightweight durability and easy cleaning. They shed water well and although not waterproof remain comfortable in sloppy conditions and dry quickly. The combination of the upper’s material along with the air-mesh tongue provides ample protection and ventilation yet doesn’t hang onto moisture and weigh the shoe down; the injection moulded toe guard fends off rock strikes too. A cushioned EVA midsole is sealed with a protective skin giving added support – Specialized’s attention to detail is high especially considering these shoes sell at a competitive price. The 2FOs have held up well to being used and abused week in, week out. This brand has been producing footwear for many years, and it shows.

At around 800g a pair, these 2FO shoes are built to last and have held up well to being used and abused week in, week out (unlike many shoes which have started falling apart after a few months). They offer excellent pedal grip and suit our often wet trail conditions. With a few tweaks apparent for the future, we should see this shoe losing a touch of weight, becoming a little lower to the pedal and using a revised tread pattern. We’ve been testing early prototypes over the last six months and it looks like one of our favourite flat pedal shoes is only going to get better with time.
