SPECIALIZED COMMAND POST IIRC

With dropper seatposts a standard fit to most trail bikes there’s a huge choice now available. the Specialized Command post has impressed us in both reliability and performance.

We first had a taste of the Command post on Specialized Stumpjumper and Enduro test bikes that rolled through the doors at Dirt HQ. The first version of this cable-operated post has three positions (just like the early Fox dropper), and a fairly clunky operation. A basic lever, designed to sit well with a left hand shifter, felt a compromise after the smooth action of the RockShox Reverb. The Command post kept on working though – and showed promise. The second generation IIRC version addressed all these concerns and quickly won us over.

So what has impressed us? First up is the action – gone are the three positions but it’s not a post with a ‘set it anywhere’ approach either. Here, Specialized have developed what they call ‘Cruiser Control’ tech – the mechanical locking system remains but you get ten positions to choose from. Fully slammed or up but with a graded section that starts just below the first drop down. If you’re moving from a post with infinite travel then this may feel odd to start with but we’ve grown to like it and is now intuitive.

The Command post ships with two levers but it’s the all-new SRL (Single ring lever) that we love. It looks very much like a SRAM shifter and sits to hand below your handlebar – light in action and always to hand, the ergonomics are spot on. Talking of ergonomics, the layback head on the Command post may find favours with some riders when fine-tuning their fit too.

Sure it’s only available with a maximum of 125mm travel (we feel Specialized have a longer stroke post in the works…) but the reliability and superb ergonomics have ensured it a place in this year’s Dirt 100. The internally routed Command IIRC has become a benchmark to judge all other cable-operated dropper posts by.
