MRP G4 CHAIN GUIDE

The MRP has been a favourite chain guide with us for years now, and a regular in the Dirt 100 line up, appearing again for 2017 as a benchmark in design and reliability.

MRP has been producing chain guides since the beginning and if you look back to the 90s, you can trace their evolution; the aluminium guide with an orange roller being an iconic design. They are part of the history and lineage of mountainbike hardware.

How then does the latest MRP G4 Chainguide compare?

MRP may well have expanded their product range (with suspension forks being their latest offering) but they have not overlooked the chain guides – it’s a massive part of what they do. We now have the latest G4 with some subtle but important improvements over the ever-popular G3. So what’s new, and why is the latest guide from MRP still at the top of our list?

Many chain devices promise much but sadly they often don’t go the distance. When things turn bad and get out of shape, the well-loved benchmark G3 guide has kept us rolling, never letting us down. MRP have designed the lower guide as either a roller or a slider, the former working well in the dust and the latter when conditions yet mucky.

‘The G4 guide has unbeatable performance and is still the choice of many top riders’

Launched about two years ago, the latest take on the original, is the G4. Here MRP has redesigned the upper retention system. This co-moulded ‘HD’ guide is nylon but now has a softer durometer TPU material on the interior walls and ceiling reducing noise levels from the chain; an improvement on the older G3 model. The lower skid plate has had attention too, now being made from an improved material. The G3 weighs in at between 153–204g, depending on whether you go for the carbon or aluminium back plate.

Fitting as always remains great, even on difficult frames, and this, along with the top-drawer build quality goes some way to justifying the premium price tag. Good spares back up from UK distributor Ison is reassuring too.

This is a very well built and reliable chain device with unbeatable performance and is still the choice of many top riders. It’s serious money but the MRP G4 has moved standards forward and again takes a place in the 2017 Dirt 100.

PRICE: £169.99 – £209.99
