Maxxis Griffin DH Tyre

New rubber for the season ahead

With an eye on lighter evenings, drier trails and the season ahead, Maxxis have sent us their new Griffin DH rubber to check out. Here we take a first look at this new tyre and what it offers. when this filthy weather is gone we’ll get it mounted on a suitable machine and give it some hammer.

We have some tried and tested tyres here at Dirt and last summer featured a round up of our favourites. Maxxis have two in our list with the Ardent being a pick for a faster rolling trail bike tyre on the rear and the ever-popular High Roller II (in its various versions) a great option on more testing terrain.

The Griffin is all-new and is a 27.5” tyre aimed at gravity and DH riding and as such only comes in a 2.4” width and a two ply reinforced casing. Maxxis use a wire bead (it’s not a tubeless compatible tyre) and a 3C Maxx grip compound (which is the new name for the DH 3C compound). This rubber compound differs from the regular 3C used on their trail tyres giving a slower more controlled rebound.

Take a look at the profile and tread on the Griffin and you’ll see pronounced shoulder knobs on a more rounded shape. The outer tread is alternating in its placement with deep lugs. Central tread is chamfered for speed with plenty in the area transitioning to the outer shoulder. It looks like a cross between the Ardent and the Ignitor from Maxxis but beefed up for serious DH use in drier yet aggressive terrain.

Weight is listed at 1180g (our test tyre hit the office scales at 1160g), which is just a touch lighter than a High Roller II 2 Ply, listed at 1305g. A Super Tacky (ST) is the only other option for the Griffin and again this comes in a 27.5” x 2.4” width only. 26″ options are listed on the Maxxis site but not currently on the UK distributor Extra UK’s price list.

A very expensive tyre for sure, especially when many brands offer quality DH rubber at much lower prices.

We need to get this tyre mounted on various rims to see how it takes shape, so roll on the spring and some drier track conditions.

PRICE: £62.99 (2 PLY 3C) £51.99 (2 PLY ST)
