The CrankBrothers Mallet DH Race Pedal has been a familiar site on the DH race scene for some years now. With a lighter weight than the long-standing DX pedal from Shimano it has much more mud clearance and is a lower profile shape.

The Mallet DH has had little competition from other brands until recently, with only the HT X2 pedal proving a notable design.

Crankbrothers pioneered a different binding mechanism from their Japanese and European competitors many years back and they have developed a loyal following. Durability has now improved – a massive improvement on the original design.

The rotating sprung clasp in the centre of the cage gives a four-sided entry with a fixed spring tension and very little for mud to cling to. Stamp on the Mallets in any conditions and you get a very positive cleat engagement.

‘The Mallet DH remains a benchmark in clipless pedal design for gravity use’

Although this is listed as a DH pedal, trail and enduro riders can benefit from running a pair of these on a mid travel machine too. Crank’ have seen fit to increase the Q-factor, moving the pedals 5mm further from the crank arms; a benefit to some now we are seeing wider spaced rear swing arms on many gravity and trail bikes.

There are cleat fitting options too, allowing either 15 or 20 degrees release angle depending on how they are set, a feature you don’t get with a Shimano pedal.

Weight is low and you may question this on a pedal aimed at hard-hitting riding and racing but we’ve not run into problems. Crankbrothers have been making incremental tweaks and with this newer, revised pedal have developed a stronger tapered axle, improved seals and bearings, even a new spring – all good news.

This latest version of the Mallet DH has the same feel as the original pedal but is lighter, stronger, more reliable and has a wider stance. It remains a benchmark in clipless pedal design for gravity use and is used by seven of the top ten UCI downhill racers.
