It’s no secret that a lot of us at Dirt have loved running a 1×10 setup on our trail bikes for quite some time now. At first we had to run a full DH style chain device in order to keep our chains in place, but thanks to the introduction of clutch style rear mechs we’ve now found that we can get away with just using a top guide. They’re not just lighter, they’re also silent and drag free if set up correctly. The problem we then found though is that with virtually all the top only guides you’re left without any form of chainring protection. That’s not ideal, especially when we’ve also got a bit of a soft spot for low bottom brackets. What we dreamt of was a top only guide that also incorporated a ‘taco’ style bash plate…and that’s exactly what MRP have given us in the shape of this AMg. It’s so simple, yet it’s just what we wanted.

As with MRP’s excellent G3 DH chain device this one is a pleasure to work on thanks to captive bolts and general clever design. MRP have also carried over the little bit of clear tube that’s on the most rearward part of the top guide to help minimise any chain slap noise. Size wise there’s a choice of either 28-32t or 32-38t chainring compatibility, and ISCG 05, ISCG and bottom bracket mounts are all catered for. You even get a choice of black or white finish, and by the sounds of it there will also be an ultralight version with a carbon back plate before too long. As it stands though, this one still only weighs in at 120g. Definitely one of our favourite trail bike chain devices.
