Launched over ten years ago the Fox 40 has seen a steady rise to world prominence. This fork has not only seen a rise in performance too, but also a consistency in terms of each and every fork that leaves the factory.

An evolution that’s resulted in a fork that now dominates most downhill riders’ wish list. The Fox 40 is now the one to beat.

This Fox fork has helped deliver several riders to World Cup series titles over the past decade and is standard hardware on the majority of our DH bikes of 2016 and indeed many of those in this year’s Dirt 100. It’s very much back where it belongs at the top of the pack and remains as one of our DH forks of the year.

With the move away from 26” wheels on DH bikes, and a reworking for the larger 650B/27.5” size we saw a new side to the 40 and one we very much warmed to. So what were these improvements? It was certainly more than just one thing. Firstly, it was the way that Fox had introduced a shade more compliance into the chassis that also dealt with the increased demands of the newer 27.5” wheel size.

‘When they launched the air version of the fork, Fox described the 40’s new chassis as lighter but ‘more compliant’. So began the rise of the fork to its current status’

Secondly the new air system now featured excellent adjustability. This Fox 40 RC2 still had a degree of deflection from its big chassis which you don’t experience on skinnier forks but Fox countered this to a degree with superb damping characteristics – hungry for action, satisfied when trouble is put in their way.

The Kashima coated legs of this fork offer a smooth, stiction free action and yes, we’ve had some top out issues where air has become displaced on occasion, but in terms of damping quality and ride characteristic it’s both smooth and strong. The 40 is an easy to understand fork too with low and high speed compression dials and an external air bleed system.

This latest version of the 40 is able to muscle every other fork off the hill.
